Bio
I'm a bass guitarist based on the local club circuit in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, playing jazz, rock, and blues. Whether it's walking a swing line behind a jazz combo, locking in a fuzzed-out rock groove, or laying back in a slow blues shuffle, I care most about serving the song and the pocket. I'm always up for a session, a sit-in, or a new project — reach out on the contact page.
Bands & Projects
Over the years, as my day job took me around the world, I've supported bands like the Groove Project (Cambridge, UK), BOP (Vienna, Austria), as well as Second Shot and Cut Loose! (Edmonton, Canada). I'm currently taking time off to develop my jazz soloing skills in the woodshed.
Musical Training
Teachers, Private Study & Woodshedding
Years of self-directed and mentored practice across jazz walking bass, blues shuffles, and rock groove playing.
Studied jazz harmony and walking bass construction with several wonderful private teachers, including Steve Lawson, Tiago Coimbra, Ed Friedland, Todd Johnson, and Sean Croal. Transcribed blues and rock bass lines by ear, and logged many hours playing along to recordings and iRealPro to lock in time and feel. Mostly, I’ve grown through playing with friends in bands and combos.
Workshops and Summer Schools
Work on ensemble programs in jazz performance, theory, and history.
I have benefitted enormously from attending various courses and workshops. In 2002 I attended a three-week music intensive in Santiago de Cuba, where I deepened my love of Cuban music. For several years I was a regular attendee at the wonderful Cambridge Jazz Co-op (UK). I have had the privilege of attending jazz workshops and summer workshop with Jamey Aebersold (London), with Stefan Redtenbacher at the Academy of Contemporary Music (Guildford), the jazz summer school at MacEwan University (Edmonton, Canada), and the JazzWire Summit (Edmonton). All were hugely enjoyable and musically transformative in different ways. In recent years I’ve been learning jazz history, music theory, and ensemble performance through the online Scott’s Bass Lessons programs and especially th Jazz Combo program at the Winspear Centre, Edmonton, under the direction of Dan Davis.
